Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal
Seven men have been arrested in Newcastle following a coordinated multi-agency operation targeting a suspected safe-cutting burglary syndicate operating across three provinces.
The arrests were made late on Sunday night during Operation “TwoBird”, a joint effort involving ITHEMBA Security SPES Intervention Unit, CCPA Amajuba District Crime Fighters Task Team, Fidelity Investigations and Specialised Operations KwaZulu-Natal, and several units of the South African Police Service (SAPS), including Crime Intelligence, the Newcastle K9 Unit and Charlestown SAPS.

According to information released by the operational team, intelligence received on 21 February 2026 indicated that a group had arrived in Newcastle with plans to carry out safe-cutting burglaries. Members were mobilised, but the suspects allegedly abandoned their intended attack.
Further intelligence on 22 February pointed to a planned burglary at a business in Allen Street in Newcastle’s central business district. Law enforcement and private security teams were deployed to conduct surveillance at the identified premises.
At approximately 10.30pm, members observed a black Audi sedan dropping off individuals at various points within the CBD. Authorities said operational technology later confirmed that suspects had gained entry to a local business.

Officers moved in and apprehended seven suspects after they allegedly attempted to flee in different directions. No injuries were reported during the arrests.
Police recovered numerous suspected stolen items, housebreaking implements and the Audi believed to have been used in the commission of the crime.
Preliminary investigations have linked the suspects to multiple business burglaries and robberies in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Mpumalanga. Police said investigations are continuing to determine whether additional suspects may be connected to the syndicate.
The seven men are expected to appear in court soon on charges related to business burglary and possession of suspected stolen property.
