BUTOKUKAN NEWCASTLE SHINE AT KARATE NATIONALS


The South African Shotokan Karate Association (SASKA) hosted the 2024 SASKA National Karate
Championships on 28 September at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Center in Brakpan, Gauteng.


Several students from the Butokukan Newcastle Dojo attended this annual event and put their martial arts to the test showing off their incredible techniques and remarkable talent.

The club’s member’s delivered stellar performances under the guidance of chief instructor, Sensei Frik Willemse , who has been teaching karate since 1990.


The tournament, which was regulated according to the World Union of Karate-do Federations (WUKF) rules ,showcased karate students from different national Dojo’s .


The following students from Butokukan Newcastle won medals in their respective divisions:

Du’Mondt de Nysschen standing proud with his gold medal.

Saalihah Ahmed. walked away with a silver medal for Kumite.

Narine Venter with her Bronze medal which she won for Kata.

From left: Abdullah Ahmed who won a bronze medal for Kumite and Kata , Achmad Ahmed who won a silver medal for Kumite and Kata and Abdul Sayed also won a bronze medal for Kumite and Kata.

Speaking to Spotlight On Newcastle, Sensei Frik Willemse beamed with pride expressing gratitude to all who attended.


“Although not all the Butokukan students won medals, they all gained valuable experience and
confidence for participation in future events. As Funakoshi Gichin, founder of Shotokan karate said,
the ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat but in the perfection of the character
of its participants. I am so proud of each student who participated in this event and we loo forward to many more,” said Sensei Frik
