In communities across South Africa, youth football continues to play a powerful role in shaping not just athletes, but confident, disciplined young people. At the heart of this movement is Sovereign All Stars Football Academy, led by passionate coach Shane Van Der Plank ,a family man whose love for the game runs deep and whose vision is rooted in uplifting the next generation.
Shane, a 30-year-old husband and father of two boys, brings a grounded and humble approach to coaching. Known for his calm nature and down-to-earth personality, he places strong value on family, something that naturally extends into how he runs the academy. For him, football is more than just a sport; it’s a space where young players feel supported, encouraged, and inspired.

“Family is everything to me. The same care and support I give my own kids is what I try to bring into the academy,” Shane says.
Having spent several years in Dubai, Shane was exposed to a richly diverse football environment. Working alongside qualified, professional coaches and engaging with players from different cultures and backgrounds gave him a broader perspective on the game. He witnessed firsthand how structured coaching and positive mentorship could ignite excitement not only in children, but in their families as well.
That experience stayed with him and ultimately shaped his decision to return home.
“Dubai opened my eyes to how powerful football can be in bringing people together. Seeing kids from all over the world connect through the game was something special,” he reflects.
Coming back to South Africa was a family-driven choice, but it also marked the beginning of something meaningful. Shane brought back with him not just international experience, but a renewed purpose, to invest in local youth and create opportunities for them to grow through football.
Sovereign All Stars Football Academy was born from that vision , a place where passion meets development.
“Coming home was always the plan. I wanted to take what I learned and give back to my own community. Our kids deserve the same opportunities to grow and shine,” he explains.
Football has always been part of Shane’s life. Growing up in a football-loving family, the game became second nature to him. While he still enjoys playing, his true passion lies in coaching , in guiding young players, helping them unlock their potential, and watching them thrive. For him, a child’s progress and confidence on the field is the greatest reward.
“I’ve loved football for as long as I can remember, but coaching is where my heart is. Watching a child improve and believe in themselves , that’s what drives me,” Shane says.

The impact of youth football speaks for itself. Studies show that children involved in organized sports are more likely to develop strong social skills, improved self-esteem, and better academic performance. Regular physical activity also contributes to healthier lifestyles, reducing the risk of obesity and related health issues. Beyond the stats, football teaches invaluable life lessons , teamwork, discipline, resilience, and creative thinking , all while allowing kids to simply enjoy being kids.
“Football isn’t just about skills. It builds confidence, teaches discipline, and helps kids grow as individuals and they get to have fun doing it,” he adds.
At Sovereign All Stars, every training session is thoughtfully planned. No two weeks are the same. Sessions are tailored around each player’s strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring balanced development. Players work on core skills such as passing, shooting, dribbling, and movement both on and off the ball. More importantly, they learn how to think on their feet, communicate with teammates, and build confidence in their abilities.
“Every child is different, so every session is different. We focus on their strengths, work on their weaknesses, and make sure they’re always learning and enjoying the game,” Shane explains.
What truly sets the academy apart is its heart. It’s not just about producing great footballers , it’s about building character, creating community, and giving young players a safe, positive environment to grow.
“If these kids leave here as better people, not just better players, then we’ve done our job,” Shane says with a smile.
As the academy continues to grow, there is also a call to the wider community. Sovereign All Stars Football Academy is currently seeking sponsors to support its mission, as a number of its young players come from underprivileged households. Additional support would go a long way in ensuring that every child has access to proper training, equipment, and opportunities to develop their talent regardless of their circumstances.
