Newcastle
The Newcastle Municipality has moved to quell rising anxiety among residents and business owners, confirming there will be no planned shutdown in Newcastle from 12 to15 May 2026 and urging the public to continue with daily activities as normal.
The clarification comes after speculation circulated online about a possible disruption to services and economic activity in the town next week.

“All municipal operations and economic activities will continue as normal,” the municipality said in a statement issued on 7 May. “This includes businesses, schools, public services and transport operations.”
Officials stressed that residents should not be deterred from going about their daily routines. “We encourage residents to continue with their daily activities without fear or uncertainty,” the statement read.
The municipality also reaffirmed its stance on maintaining stability while upholding constitutional rights.
“Newcastle Municipality remains committed to maintaining peace, stability, and public order while supporting the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and demonstration,” the Communications and Customer Relations Directorate said.

Authorities appealed to anyone planning lawful gatherings to do so responsibly. “We appeal to all participants and members of the public to conduct themselves responsibly, peacefully, and within the confines of the law of any lawful gatherings.”
The statement aims to prevent unnecessary panic and protect the local economy, which has already been under strain from ongoing water supply issues and rising fuel costs in the district.
Local business owners have welcomed the clarity. “We’ve had customers asking if they should stock up or close early next week,” said a Madadeni shop owner who asked not to be named. “It’s a relief to hear it’s business as usual.”
A parent in Osizweni added: “With exams coming up, the last thing we need is disruption to schools or transport. I’m glad the municipality has spoken out early.”
Newcastle Local Municipality said it will continue to monitor the situation and will communicate promptly if circumstances change.
