The incidence of breast cancer among South African women is increasing and it is one of the most common cancers among women in the country followed by cervical cancer. It is also the most prevalent cancer amongst white and Asian women and the second most common cancer among black and coloured women , this according to Statistics South Africa.
In South Africa, some groups are at a higher risk of cancer than others, due to co-morbidities or because of unequal access to treatment, with those seeking treatment from the Public Health Care System waiting for longer periods in order to get medical assistance.
In Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia and Morocco had the highest incidence and mortality in 2023. These countries also account for 45% of cases and 44% of cancer deaths.
In light of this the Newcastle SAPS in collaboration with Social Crime Prevention, Women’s Network and Men for Change ,held an awareness on 25 October to remember those who have lost their battle and to those who are bravely fighting cancer .

Kicking off the formalities, SAC NC Ndlovue offered a heartfelt prayer and tribute followed by a motivational speech by Major General Alexander who emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups and spiritual well-being.
Representatives from the Department of Health provided also provided insightful information on cancer, the effects and prevention strategies.

“Lighting candles during this time symbolizes hope and remembrance to those who are fighting cancer battles and we also pay tribute to those who have passed on,” said Major General Alexander.

Research shows that although no single food can protect one against cancer by itself, a diet filled with a variety of vegetables , fruits, whole grains, beans and other plant based foods helps to lower the risks for many cancers.
