The Department of Basic Education (DBE) in KwaZulu-Natal has issued a warning to learners to refrain from hosting or attending ‘pens down’ parties as concerns have been raised about the potential dangers lurking at these events.
This comes after matric final examinations are set to conclude on 28 November. This will bring to an end six long weeks of tiresome studying for the class of 2024.

These parties are organized following the end of exams. In a statement released by the DBE ,Kwazulu-Natal MEC Sipho Hlomuka said that parents, guardians and communities need to work together to prevent risky ‘Pens Down’ events.
“While we commend our learners for completing this critical chapter of their academic journey, we cannot condone activities that place them and others at risk. Let us prioritise safety, respect for property and the wellbeing of our communities during this time,” said Hlomuka.
He further stated that ‘pens down’ parties were notorious for public drinking, vandalism and inappropriate behavior such as tearing and writing on school uniforms which undermine the value of respect and responsibility that is instilled in learners.
“While the end of exams mark a major milestone, learners are urged to celebrate the achievement responsibly and in a manner that reflects dignity and respect for themselves, their peers and community,” he said.
Here are some safety tips for the class of 2024 :
- If you are driving, make sure to consider a tracking app where your location is updated on the mobile applications every two seconds providing true real-time live tracking. Knowing exactly where you are means accident alerts can be received in real time resulting faster emergency dispatching where every second counts.
- Never carry large amounts of cash or go out wearing flashy or expensive jewelry.
- When out at different events and activities, be aware of your surroundings and arrange with your friends to keep an eye on each other and your belongings.
- Do not accept drinks from strangers and do not leave your drinks unattended. Spiking of drinks is still rife.
- Do not accept lifts from strangers.
