Motorsport has always been more than just engines and speed , it is a lifestyle deeply rooted in passion, discipline, and community. For many families in Newcastle and surrounding areas, racing has long been part of their identity, passed down through generations and shared in pit lanes, grandstands, and workshops. The revival of the oval racing track marks the return of that culture to a town that has always had motorsport in its blood.

Introducing Northern Natal Motorsport Raceway

At the centre of this revival are long-time racers and motorsport advocates, husband-and-wife duo Faizel and Razia Cassim. For them, racing is not a pastime but a way of life.

“Motorsport shaped who I am today,” says Faizel Cassim. “It taught me discipline, focus, respect, and perseverance. Bringing this track back isn’t just about racing again , it’s about giving the next generation the same opportunities we had growing up.”

The primary focus of the project is the comprehensive revamp of the oval racing track, restoring it as a safe, structured, and exciting venue for motorsport activities. Once complete, the facility will cater to oval track racing, spinning, kids’ racing, go-karting, and RC car racing, creating an inclusive motorsport hub for enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. The track is also affiliated proudly to the World Of Motorsport South Africa (WOMZA).

A major milestone is fast approaching. Phase 1 of the rehabilitation of the oval track will be completed at the end of February, paving the way for the highly anticipated return to racing. The first practice event will take place on 28 February, signaling the start of a new chapter for motorsport in Newcastle and affording car enthusiasts to come out for a practice run. Gates open at 1pm, with free entry for the entire family for that day, ensuring everyone can be part of this exciting moment. Stalls are available at a cost of R200, offering local traders and vendors the perfect opportunity to showcase their businesses at this landmark event.

The first official event will take place on 7 March 2026.

“We wanted the first event to be accessible to everyone,” says Razia Cassim. “This track belongs to the community. Free entry allows families, kids, and motorsport fans to come experience the atmosphere and be part of something special from day one.”

The vision for the track extends well beyond the initial reopening. Phase 2 of the development will consist of tarring the centre of the track, significantly enhancing the quality, safety, and versatility of the venue. This phase is anticipated to be completed by the end of May 2026.

“Each phase is carefully planned,” Faizel explains. “We’re building this step by step to ensure the track meets proper standards and can host a wide variety of motorsport disciplines safely and professionally.”
Looking further ahead, Phase 3 will introduce a dedicated 200-metre race strip, scheduled for completion in December this year. This addition will expand the scope of motorsport disciplines hosted at the venue and position the facility as a multi-purpose motorsport destination.

“The race strip opens up a whole new side of motorsport for Newcastle,” Faizel adds. “It means more events, more competitors, and more opportunities for young drivers to learn in a controlled environment instead of on public roads.”

Youth development remains a core pillar of the project. Faizel and Razia believe motorsport plays a crucial role in teaching responsibility, teamwork, discipline, and respect — for the sport, for others, and for the machines themselves.
“Motorsport gives young people structure and purpose,” says Razia. “When kids are given guidance, rules, and positive role models, it keeps them focused and away from dangerous behaviour like illegal street racing.”

The revival of the oval track is also expected to generate meaningful economic and tourism benefits for the region. Motorsport events attract competitors, spectators, and families from surrounding areas, stimulating local businesses such as accommodation providers, restaurants, fuel stations, and retailers.
“This isn’t just about motorsport,” Razia explains. “It’s about boosting the local economy and creating something Newcastle can be proud of again.”

Equally important is the sense of unity the project aims to restore. Motorsport brings people together across backgrounds and generations, fostering friendships and strengthening community ties.
“This track has always been a meeting place,” says Faizel. “We want it to be where families spend weekends together, where talent is discovered, and where lifelong memories are made.”
