A 132kv EQUARAND sub station project was launched on 31 January in Ward 34. The multimillion-rand initiative is set to boost the local economy.
The Newcastle Municipality stated that the project has marked a significant milestone in the municipality’s quest to provide reliable and efficient electricity supply to many.

The project is anticipated to create over 25 local employment opportunities during construction which will stimulate local economic growth.
Speaking at the official launch, Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube emphasized that all subcontractors for the project will be locally sourced.
” This will promote local economic development and empower small businesses. Disables persons will also be employed, demonstrating the municipality’s commitment to inclusivity,” said Dube.

According to the municipality, Wards 34 ,24 and 3 have been experiencing an increase in electricity demand due to new developments such as the Siyahlala-la Housing project, the establishment of a UNISA campus and the Hospital Street Housing Project.
“In order to avoid a situation where the electricity supply is lower than demand, the municipality is investing in this critical infrastructure. We will be paying special attention to infrastructure development through the Department for Mineral Resources, allowing for more investment, job opportunities and reduced crime in town. The project is funded by the Integrated National Electrification Programme and is expected to be completed between 1 February and 1 October 2027,” explained Dube.

The main appointed contractor for this project will be headed by MNP Engineering Projects while Igoda consulting Engineers has been appointed as the consultant.
